Cancer education for young people
Cancer affects 1 in 2 people in their lifetime, and it can feel overwhelming for young people and their families. That’s why we’re working to bring cancer education into schools and communities across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw. By learning about cancer, its signs and symptoms, and how to support each other, we can make a difference together.
Why cancer education matters
Understanding cancer helps young people feel more prepared and confident when it comes to the topic. It’s not just about the science, it’s about knowing what to look out for, how to talk about it, and how to support family, or friends affected by cancer.
Cancer education increases knowledge, encourages open conversations, and empowers young people to take action for their own health and the health of their family members and friends.
What’s available?
We’ve created a bank of engaging, age-appropriate resources for educational settings. These resources include a four-part lesson pack designed to:
• Explain what cancer is in a clear and sensitive way
• Highlight signs and symptoms to be aware of
• Encourage ways to support peers, friends, and family affected by cancer
Our approach is designed to be supportive and appropriate, with safeguarding guidance to help teachers deliver the lessons confidently.
These resources are going to be continually updated based on feedback and further resources will continue to be added.
